Bank credit grows 7.10% to Rs 99.47 lakh cr; deposits up 10% to Rs 130 lakh cr

According to the latest Reserve Bank data, banks’ credit and deposits grew by 7.10 per cent and 10.09 per cent to Rs 99.47 lakh crore and Rs 130.08 lakh crore in the fortnight ended December 20.
In the year-ago fortnight, banks’ advances stood at Rs 92.87 lakh crore, while deposits were at Rs 118.16 lakh crore.
On a year-on-year basis, banks’ credit growth slowed to 7.2 per cent to Rs 86.73 lakh crore in November 2019 from 13.8 per cent increase to Rs 80.93 lakh crore in the year-ago period.
Loans to industry growth fell to 2.4 per cent to Rs 27.72 lakh crore in November from 4 per cent in the corresponding month of 2018.
During the month, credit to agriculture and allied activities slowed to 6.5 per cent from 7.7 per cent last year.
Advances to the services sector decelerated sharply to 4.8 per cent from 28.1 per cent last year. Personal loans grew at a marginally lower rate of 16.4 per cent in November 2019 as compared to 17.2 per cent earlier.


Bharat Bond ETF debuts at the NSE, trades above Rs 1,000

The units of the ambitious Bharat Bond ETF (exchange traded fund) issued by Edelweiss Asset Management (AMC) got listed at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Thursday.
Last month, the ETF saw an oversubscription of 1.7 times, garnering Rs 12,000 crore which is likely to be utilized for capital expenditure (capex) of PSUs.
The ETF will invest only in AAA-rated bonds of public sector companies and will have target maturity period. The investors who hold these ETFs for over 3 years will get the benefit of capital gains with indexation.


Hillary Clinton appointed as new chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast in Ireland

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been appointed the new chancellor of Queen’s University in Belfast, Ireland. Clinton, who has been a regular visitor to Northern Ireland going back to the first visit of President Bill Clinton in 1995, becomes the university’s first female chancellor.
She will serve as chancellor for a five-year term.


HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal to inaugurate 28th New Delhi World Book Fair

Human Resources Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal will inaugurate the 28th edition of annual New Delhi World Book Fair at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. The book fair organised by National Book Trust (NBT) will be held from January 4 to 12 in the national capital.
As part of Mahatma Gandhiji’s 150 birth anniversary celebrations, the theme of this year is Gandhi: The Writers’ Writer.

PM inaugurates 107th edition of Indian Science Congress in Bengaluru

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 107th edition of the Indian Science Congress (ISC) at University of Agricultural Sciences in Bengaluru.
The theme of ISC this year is “Science and Technology: Rural Development”.
Over 15,000 participants, including Nobel Laureates, Scientists, intellectuals, academicians, police makers, researchers, students and delegates from different institutions are participating in the event.
There will be 28 Plenary Sessions during the event, on areas ranging from Climate Smart Agriculture for Food Security, Crop Improvement Towards Food and Nutrition Security to Artificial Intelligence and Medical Technology.

RBI launches app to help visually impaired persons to identify denomination of Indian Banknotes

The Reserve Bank has launched a mobile application for aiding visually impaired persons to identify the denomination of Indian Banknotes.

In a press release issued from Mumbai, RBI said the “Mobile Aided Note Identifier – MANI” is capable of identifying the denominations of Mahatma Gandhi Series and Mahatma Gandhi (New) series banknote by checking front or reverse side of the notes, including half folded notes under broad range of light conditions.

The apex bank has informed that the application is free and can be downloaded from the Android Play Store and iOS App Store, adding that the app does not require internet and works in offline mode.


Indian Railways integrate helpline numbers into single number – 139

File PicIndian Railways has integrated its helpline numbers into a single number – 139 for quick grievance redressal and enquiries by passengers during their train journeys.

The new helpline number 139 will take over all the existing helpline numbers. It will be easy for passengers to remember this number and connect with Railways for all their needs during train travel.


‘Cyber Safe Women’ initiative Launched by Maharashtra Government

The state government of Maharashtra Government has launched a ‘Cyber Safe Women’ initiative to ensure that women and children do not fall prey to these cyber criminal activities.
Under the initiative, various awareness camps will be held across all the districts of the state regarding cyber safety to help in educating women about how the web is used by anti-social elements and child predators to commit various types of crimes.
The initiative has been launched on 03 January 2020 to mark the 189th birthday of Savitribai Phule, a 19th century social reformer who has many accomplishments to her credit, mostly towards education of women in India.

Cristiano Ronaldo won the Best Men’s Player of the Year award at the Dubai Globe Soccer Awards held on December 29 in Dubai. Ronaldo has won the award six times out of its nine years of its existence. England international Lucy Bronze was crowned Best Women’s Player of the Year. The 2019 Awards were presented in 16 different categories
The Globe Soccer Awards are the annual awards given for excellence in football, organised by the EFAA (European Association of Player’s Agents) and the ECA (European Club Association).
