World Telecommunication and Information Society Day was observed on 17 May
World Telecommunication and Information Society Day was observed on 17 May every year. The day aims to celebrate the power of telecommunication and its importance in building relationships across cultures around the world. The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day aims to raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information communications technology (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, and the ways to bridge the digital divide. The theme for the year 2020 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is “Connect 2030: ICTs for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

 

World Hypertension Day is observed on 17 May
World Hypertension Day (WHD) is observed on 17 May every year. The day aims to promote public awareness of hypertension. It also encourages all the people across the world to prevent and control this silent killer. The observation of World Hypertension Day was initiated by the World Hypertension League (WHL). The day was first inaugurated in May 2005. The theme of 2020 World Hypertension Day is “Measure Your Blood Pressure, Control It, Live Longer.” It focuses to create awareness about raising high blood pressure (BP) in all the populations around the world.

 

PM of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu sworn-in for the 5th time
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu finally swore in his new government on 17 May for the fifth time. The ceremony of the swearing-in of Israel’s new government, the Knesset, was held in accordance with coronavirus social distancing directives. Netanyahu will be in power until 13 November 2021.

 

ESDS launched AA plus COVID-19 testing solution to detect coronavirus
IT solutions provider ESDS Software Solution has developed AA+ COVID-19 Testing Solution, a rapid COVID-19 detection solution powered by Deepiotics. The solution is an AI-enabled tool that detects COVID-19 from Chest X-rays (CXRs). AA+ COVID-19 Testing Solution has been designed in a way that it can indicate whether the patient is suffering from COVID-19 in less than 5 minutes.

 

Centre introduces several initiatives to boost Education Sector
Union Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced several initiatives to boost the education sector on 17 May in New Delhi. The move comes as the present pandemic situation has presented new challenges and several opportunities for the education system in the country. A comprehensive initiative called PM e-VIDYA will be launched which unifies all efforts related to digital/online/on-air education. This will enable multi-mode access to education, and includes: DIKSHA (one nation-one digital platform), TV (one class-one channel), SWAYAM online courses in MOOCS format for school and higher education, IITPAL for IITJEE/NEET preparation. GoI’s move to expand e-learning in higher education by liberalizing open, distance, and online education regulatory framework.

 

Researchers found a new species fungi named Troglomyces twitteri
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen’s Natural History Museum of Denmark discover new species of parasitic fungus via Twitter. The newly discovered fungus was named “Troglomyces twitteri”, after Twitter. Discovery: The discovery was made by the biologist and associate professor Ana Sofia Reboleira of the National Natural History Museum.

 

ISRO directs startups to build local tech for Gaganyaan mission
India’s space agency Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has directed the startups to develop tools and machines for its maiden human space flight Gaganyaan-1 mission. ISRO focuses to potentially help them build products and solutions that they can exploit commercially. The move is expected to open up opportunities for new types of companies to come up in India.
