44th New Delhi World Book Fair begins:

The 44th edition of the New Delhi “World Book Fair” that is set to begin on January 7th, will be themed “Manushi” focusing on “Writings on and by Women’. The 9-day-long fair organised by National Book Trust (NBT) in association with India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) will aim to show and project the diversity of writings by women writings.


14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention begins in Bengaluru:

The 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention began in Bengaluru on 7th January. The three-day event kick started with youth PBD, the theme of which is “Role of Diaspora Youth” in the Transformation of India. The PBD convention is a very important platform for engagement of the central and state governments with the Overseas  Indian Community. PM. Modi inaugurated PBD with the Chief guest of the event, PM of Portugal Dr. Antonio Costa.


Astronomers discover powerful cosmic double Whammy:

Astronomers have discovered a cosmic one-two- punch unlike any ever seen before. Two of the most powerful phenomena in the Universe, A supermassive black hole, and the collision of giant galaxy clusters, have combined to create a stupendous cosmic particle accelerator. This double Whammy is found in a pair of colliding galaxy clusters called Abell 3411 and Abell 3412 located about two billion light years from earth.


AP’s CM offer – Win a Nobel Prize, Get Rs. 100 Crore Reward:

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on January 4th announced a reward of Rs.100 crore to anybody who from the state who wins a Nobel Prize. No other state Govt in India has perhaps made such a grand offer it its scientists. He advised children to enjoy the work they do and work hard to accomplish it. “Small innovations will lead to great discoveries”.


Aadhaar is Mandatory for EPFO Members and Pensioners:

Employees provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made Aadhar Card mandatory for it’s about 50 lakh pensioners and around four crore subscribers. Central Provident Fund Commissioner V.P. Joy stated that the pensioners as well as members would have to provide Aadhar or a proof that they have applied for it by 31 January 2017 to remain the beneficiary of social security schemes of EPFO.

World Bank holds meet with India on Indo-Pak Indus Treaty:

India on January 5th asked the world Bank not to rush in to broker a deal on its dispute with Pakistan over Kishenganga and Ratle Project, asserting that the differences can be resolved bilaterally or through a neutral expert. The World Bank is keen that the dispute is sorted in an amicable manner in line with the spirit of the treaty.


Delhi Govt unveils Good Samaritan Policy:

Delhi Govt on January 6th approved Good Samaritan Policy under which monetary incentive of Rs.2000 and appreciation certificate will be given to people who help road accident victims in the national capital. Announcing the cabinet decision, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that the scheme is intended to encourage people to take accident victims in emergency situation to hospitals so that sometimes life could be saved.


India GDP growth to slow to 7.1% in FY 17:

India’s economic growth is likely to decelerate to 7.1% from 7.6 the previous year, chiefly due to an industrial slowdown, the government said on January 6th sidestepping the possible impact of demonetization. Per capita net national income during 2016-17 estimated to be Rs.1,03,077, rise of 10.4% as compared to Rs. 93,293 during 2015-16 with the growth rate of 7.6%.


All India Conference of Waqf Boards begins:

The All India Conference of Chairpersons and Chief Executive Officers of States and Union Territories Waqf Boards has begun in New Delhi. It was inaugurated by Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi. Various issues, including review of progress under the schemes relating to grant of financial assistance for computerization of Waqf Properties, strengthening of Waqf Boards and development of properties by National Waqf Development Corporation.


Japan to help in developing Chennai, Ahmedabad and Varanasi Smart Cities:

Japan has decided to associate itself with India in developing Chennai, Ahmedabad and Varanasi as smart cities. During a meeting of Japanese Ambassador to India Kenji Hiramatsu  with Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said, “Japan is quite interested” in urban development initiatives of the government and decided to be a partner in that programme.
