Pavithra Naveen claimed Pan Tech-Abu Dhabi 83rd State senior championships
Pavithra Naveen claimed the Pan Tech-Abu Dhabi 83rd State senior championships at the EISA Badminton Academy, at Ettumanoor, Kerala. The unseeded Pavithra defeated Kozhikode’s fifth-seeded N.Aswathy 16-21, 21-16, 21-16 in the women’s final. In men’s final Kozhikode’s unseeded Mohammed Munawar won the title by defeating Ernakulam’s top-seeded M. Shyam Prasad. He defeated Prasad by securing 21-16, 21-16. It is Munawar’s fourth State men’s trophy.
India seeks DAC approval to procure SPIKE missiles from Israel
The Army has brought its idea to buy the Spike anti-tank guided missiles from Israel before the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) for approval. DAC is to conduct some validation trials for the procurement process. The deal is for 170 launchers, 4,500 missiles and 15 simulators. Spike is a fourth-generation, man-portable missile, fire-and-forget Israeli missile manufactured by Israel’s Rafael. Earlier in January, the deal was cancelled saying the requirement can be met through the indigenous man-portable missile being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Scientist Dr VR Lalithambika is heading India’s First Human Space Mission
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has chosen veteran scientist Dr VR Lalithambika to head its Gaganyaan mission to put an Indian in space by 2022. The 56-year-old scientist has 30 years of experience in space missions with ISRO. She was also a key member of the team responsible for launching 104 satellites in one go in February 15, 2017.
IRDA Raised Minimum Driver Insurance Cover To INR 15 Lakh
Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority raised the minimum insurance cover for owner-driver to Rs. 15 lakh for a premium of Rs. 750 per annum, a move to provide some succour to road accident victims. Currently, the capital sum insured (CSI) under this section for motorized two-wheelers and private cars/commercial vehicles is Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 2 lakh, respectively.
BSNL signed deal with SoftBank, NTT to roll out 5G in India
BSNL Chairman Anupam Shrivastava announced that BSNL with Japan’s SoftBank and NTT Communications may launch 5G internet service and Internet of Things (IoT) technology by 2020 in India. BSNL has signed agreement with Nokia and Cisco as well for developing 5G ecosystem.

Mahendra Singh become the second most capped player for India in international cricket as he played his 505th match for India in the Super Four of Asia Cup 2018 against Pakistan on September 23. Before Dhoni, Rahul Dravid was the second most capped player for India with 504 caps in international cricket. Mysuru city police is to launch Mysuraksha app
The Mysuru city police are to launch Mysuraksha app soon. The aim is to ensure the safety and security of passengers who use auto and cab. While downloading the app on their smartphones, the passengers can scan the Quick Response (QR) code printed on autos and cabs that will have the details of the vehicle and the driver. If the passengers encounter any trouble with the auto or cab drivers, they should just press the SOS button in the app. It will transmit the details of the cab/auto to the police control room. The location of the passenger will be traced through Global Positioning System (GPS) and the nearest police patrol vehicle will be alerted and rushed to the rescue of the passenger. The police plans make sure and provide help in time to people and protect them from harassment, intimidation and assault of passengers, through an app and make their journey safe and smooth.
Citizen Science platform helps to save Hornbills
A Citizen Science platform is an initiative to create awareness so that the public also can participate in the conservation of the unique bird. The platform was launched by scientists Aparajita Datta and Rohit Naniwadekar from Nature Conservation Foundation and Ramki Sreenivasan and Vikram Hiresavi from Conservation India. It is introduced to provide the information on hornbill distribution in the country. An interactive web interface named the Hornbill Watch initiative (www.hornbills.in) allows a person to report on hornbills anywhere in India. If the bird is found outside the protected area, the public can record the details and inform the conservationists so that the birds can be protected from possible threats and development projects. The platform can also serve as a centralized database that will allow the public to determine changes in animal distributions over time.

Modi launched Pradhan Mantri-Jan Aarogya Yojana (PMJAY)
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Pradhan Mantri-Jan Aarogya Yojana (PM-JAY), the mega healthcare scheme Ayushman Bharat, from Ranchi, Jharkhand. Modi in his speech said that the scheme would be a “game changer” globally in health insurance. PM-JAY is the world’s largest health scheme. It will cover around 50 crore people. The scheme will pilot in 106 districts in 14 states of the country. The scheme will be providing an annual coverage of Rs.5 lakh per family for nearly 1,350 diseases. The eligible people can avail the benefits of the scheme in government and listed private hospitals. There is no cap on family size and age to ensure that nobody is left out.
