PM to unveil the worlds largest statue

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to unveil Sardar Patel’s statue, the world’s largest, on Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary on October 31 in Gujarat. The statue is a Rs.3,000 crore project. It is funded for the most part by the Gujarat government, with minor contributions from the Centre and Central PSUs. The statue is made up of 1,700 tonnes of bronze, 1,850 tonnes of bronze cladding, 70,000 metric tonnes of cement and 24,500 metric tonnes of steel. Two high-speed elevators inside can take tourists up to the statue’s chest from where around 200 visitors can view the Narmada river and the Sardar Sarovar dam over it.

State Bank of India and Hitachi Payments formed joint venture for digital payment platform

State Bank of India (SBI) and payments solution provider Hitachi Payment Services India entered into an agreement to form a joint venture for establishing a card acceptance and digital payment platform. According to the joint venture (JV), Hitachi will pick up 26 percent stake in SBI Payment Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SBI. The JV will have various payment options to customers and merchants.

Vedanta Ltd. gets 10 year extension for oil block

Vedanta Ltd., a mining company, won a 10-year extension of its contract for the prolific Rajasthan oil block. The extension was made under a condition that it pays a higher share of profit to the government. The 25-year contract for exploration and production of oil and gas from Barmer block RJ-ON-90/1 of Vedanta, formerly Cairn India, is due for renewal on May 14, 2020.

Worlds largest airport under one roof opened in Istanbul, Turkey

World’s largest airport terminal under one roof with a capacity to serve 90 million passengers was opened in Istanbul, Turkey. It has been constructed as a part of the phase-1A of the project – Istanbul New Airport. It has been constructed by – IGA and the first phase costed 7.5 billion Euro. It has five pier blocks as well as 77 boarding gates and 143 aero-bridges.

India and Japan signed a currency swap agreement worth USD 75 billion

India and Japan signed a currency swap agreement worth $75 billion. The agreement happened during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Japan. The agreement aimed at a great friendship between the two countries and to further strengthen the economic cooperation. It is expected that the swap arrangement should aid in bringing greater stability to foreign exchange and capital markets in India. 

Indias first container movement on inland waterways to move 16 PEPSICO containers from Kolkata to Varanasi

PepsiCo (India) will move 16 containers equivalent to 16 truckloads in the vessel MV RN Tagore which will reach Varanasi in 9-10 days. MV RN Tagore will make its return journey with fertilizers belonging to IFFCO that will be procured from its Phulpur plant near Allahabad. The vessel will be flagged off by Secretary (Shipping), Govt. of India, Shri Gopal Krishna along with Chairman, IWAI, Shri Pravir Pandey.

WHO reported that Delhi topped national charts in bad air quality

World Health Organization’s (WHO) report on most polluted cities 2018 said 14 out of the 20 most polluted cities in the world are in India. WHO reported that Delhi topped the charts of bad air quality nationally. Also, the WHO children’s health report released on 29th October said that 93% of the world’s children under 15 years breathe polluted air. Indian environmentalists analysed the same issue in 14 cities using the Central Pollution Control Board of India (CPCB) data and concluded the same. Most cities, unlike Delhi, do not have an emergency response plan to tackle air pollution. Some of the cities like Patna and Varanasi have recently formulated action plans. There is no special governing body in place to issue advisories or mitigate the pollution at the source level instantly as in the case of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

Train 18: India first engineless train set for trials

It is a 16-coach prototype without a locomotive (engine) that will travel at a speed of up to 160 kmph. It was developed by the city-based Integral Coach Factory, Chennai in 18 months as part of the ‘Make In India’ initiative. It cost nearly Rs 100 crore and will cut travel time by 15 percent compared to the Shatabdi.
