CPEC to focus on social service sectors of Pakistan
To support Prime Minister Imran Khan’s focus on the development of social infrastructure China and Pakistan are now looking for projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said that the two sides will enhance the building of CPEC, and decide the future development path and the course for cooperation through negotiations in light of Pakistan’s next-stage socio-economic development priorities and the needs of its people. Mr.Geng’s focus on developing social infrastructure in Pakistan chimes with Prime Minister Imran Khan’s emphasis on pursuing a people-oriented approach.
PM Modi, Bangladesh PM launch 3 key projects via video conferencing
PM Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina have launched three key projects: ♦ 15-km Akhaura-Agartala rail link which will be operational in next two years; ♦ rebuilding Kulaura-Shahbazpur section of Bangladesh Railways. ♦ The third project is the additional 500MW power supply from India to Bangladesh via Bheramara-Baharampur interconnection.
Jammu and Kashmir becomes 3rd State to adopt RADMS software
The Road Accident Data Management System (RADMS) software is a geographical information system (GIS) solution for identification of black spots, wrong driving practices, overloading issues, driver issues and other factors causing or related to road accidents. In 2015, the ‘Supreme Court committee on road safety’ had mandated all states to use RADMS.
Sushma Swaraj to visit Russia on September 13
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will embark on a two-day visit to Russia. She will co-chair the 23rd India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Technical & Economic Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) with Yuri Borisov, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russia. She will also discuss Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to India to attend the India-Russia Annual Summit later this year.
India is to overtake China in farmed shrimp production in FY 2019-20
Ravi Kumar Yellanki, president, Society of Aquaculture Professionals, said that India is set to gain the top slot in farmed shrimp production by overtaking China in 2019-20. The 7 lakh tonnes of shrimp production target was the target for the year 2018 and India might end up producing 6.5 lakh tonnes, which equals China’s production. Last year, India produced 6 lakh tonnes. The Shrimp production in China is declined due to the outbreak of the Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) disease. India was not affected by EMS. Brackish water is required for Shrimp cultivation. Huge tracts of land, 15 lakh hectares, were available to host brackish water for cultivation but only 10% of it is being used for shrimp production. Several shrimp producers are planning to expand capacity. This will make India overcome China in shrimp production and export. Early Mortality Syndrome: ♦ Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) or Hepatopancreatic Acute Necrosis Syndrome is a disease that affects shrimp ♦ The disease was first seen in China in 2009. In 2013, EMS was reported for the first time outside Asia, showing up in Mexico ♦ The symptoms include erratic swimming or swimming near the bottom of the pond, whitening of the hepatopancreas, reduction in the size of hepatopancreas, Dark spots or streaks on the hepatopancreas etc. ♦ It can be controlled by providing selective breeding for resistance to EMS, improving farm practices and infrastructures with biosecure intensive ponds, and providing integrated farm management
Jamie Murray and Bethanie Mattek won mixed doubles US Open 2018 title
Britian’s Jamie Murray and American Bethanie Mattek-Sands captured the U.S. Open mixed doubles title with a 2-6 6-3 11-9 victory over Croatia’s Nikola Mektic and Poland’s Alicja Rosolska. Mattek-Sands has also won mixed doubles Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and French Open. Murray had three other Grand Slam mixed doubles titles.
NASA’s Dawn mission is about to end
Dawn, NASA’s only robot exploring the Asteroid Belt, is about to die. The spacecraft is likely to run out of a key fuel knwon as hydrazine — which keeps it oriented and in communication with Earth — between September and October. Launched in September 2007, Dawn was majorly tasked to study two of the three known protoplanets of the asteroid belt Vesta and Ceres.

SpiceJet launched air cargo services
SpiceJet launched air cargo services and it also inducted its first freighter aircraft. The services will be offered under the brand name SpiceXpress. It will be set up as a separate business unit under the monitor of SpiceJet Limited. The cargo flight services would commence from September 18. The airline plans to add four more freighter aircraft during the current fiscal. The air cargo operations will cover Delhi, Bengaluru, Guwahati, Hong Kong, Kabul and Amritsar. The airline’s freighters fleet will consist of Boeing 737 planes. It will extend its operations through its common pool of resources like pilots, engineers, ground staff, airport infrastructure.
India, U.S. signed COMCASA agreement
Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) will facilitate access to advanced defence systems and enable India to optimally utilise its existing US-origin platforms. The 2+2 ministerial dialogue between the two countries was attended by U.S. Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo and Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis and their Indian counterparts Sushma Swaraj and Nirmala Sitharaman.
Delhi launched government services at doorstep delivery
Delhi government launched a new project to deliver public services at the doorstep of residents. As per the project, the people in Delhi can now apply for 40 government documents to be delivered to their homes for a fee of Rs.50 per service. Delhiites can utilise the facility to apply from driving licences to marriage certificates. The customer should dial 1076 and fix an appointment with a Mobile Sahayak, who will go to their home and help with filling forms, payment of fees and collection of documents. The Mobile Sahayak would then submit the documents to the concerned government officials, which would post the certificate or licence once issued. So far 2,728 calls were connected and 1,286 were answered by the operators. The calls that were attempted but were unable to connect would be returned by the operators.

Bengaluru International Airport first in country to roll out facial recognition facility from 2019
Bengaluru International Airport announced that roll out facial recognition facility for the passengers of some select airlines from 2019. The first few airlines involved with this are Jet Airways, Air Asia and SpiceJet. This makes BIAL the first aerodrome in the country to implement paperless air travel. It has inked a pact with the Lisbon-based digital and biometric solutions services provider Vision-Box to implement the technology. This is a part of the Digi Yatra project to make boarding process paperless.
