Three northeastern States emerge as new HIV hotspots
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura have emerged as the new hotspots for HIV. In terms of persons living with HIV (PLHIV) who are on Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART), Maharashtra has the highest number (with 2.03 lakh persons) followed by A.P.(1.78 lakh ) and Karnataka (1.58 lakh persons).
Delhi High Court decriminalises begging
Delhi High Court struck down a legal provision that criminalises begging in the national capital. The petitioners, Harsh Mandar and Karnika Sawhney, sought basic amenities like proper food and medical facilities at all beggars’ homes in the city. Currently, there is no central law on begging and destitution and most states have adopted the Bombay Prevention of Begging Act, 1959, which criminalises beggary or have modelled their laws on it. The two petitions have challenged the Bombay Prevention of Begging Act.

Govt hikes import duty on 328 textile items to boost domestic production
Under Section 159 of the Customs Act, 1962, the Government increased customs duty on 328 tariff lines of textile products from the existing rate of 10 per cent to 20 per cent, to provide a boost to manufacturing of these items in India. A notification to this effect was tabled by minister of state for finance Pon Radhakrishnan in the Lok Sabha. The government last month had doubled import duty on over 50 textile products – including jackets, suits and carpets – to 20 per cent.
President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated ‘One District One Product’ Summit in UP
One District One Product (ODOP) scheme will help each district of Uttar Pradesh to manufacture one product. Under this ODOP scheme, the state government has set a goal of providing employment to 25 lakh people in five years through the financial assistance of Rs. 25,000 crores. During the summit, with a tagline of ‘Nayi Udaan, Nayi Pehchan’, the President distributed loan sanction papers amounting to Rs 1,006.94 crore to 4,085 artisans from 75 districts.
Neeraj Chopra named Indian flag bearer for the Asian Games 2018 opening ceremony
Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has been handed the honour of being the Indian contingent’s flag bearer at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia’s Jakarta and Palembang. He won the gold medal in Commonwealth Games 2018 event in Gold Coast earlier this year. The announcement was made by Dr Narinder Batra, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Former hockey captain Sardar Singh was India’s flag bearer at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.
India ranked 177 on the Environmental Performance Index 2018
According to the World Economic Forum (WEF) ranking, India has been placed 177th rank out of 180 countries on the Environmental Performance Index 2018. The Union Environment Ministry has rejected the score by considering it as arbitrary and unscientific. India slipped 36 points from 141 in the 2016 report, prepared by Yale and Columbia Universities along with the WEF. WEF said that India’s remark was linked to the poor performance in the environmental health policy and deaths due to air pollution categories. Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change said that the reason for India’s decline is because of the change in parameters between two editions of the report.
Astronomers spotted a very distant radio galaxy
Astronomers, from Pune, used an Indian telescope, Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), and discovered the most distant radio galaxy ever known. The galaxy is located at a distance of 12 billion light-years. One of the very rare objects in the universe is the Radio galaxies. They are colossal galaxies with a supermassive black hole in their centre that actively accretes gas and dust from its surroundings. The discovery of such galaxies at extremely large distances will help in understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies.
Oral Hygiene Day was celebrated in KLEVE Institute of Dental Sciences
Students and teachers of the Department of Periodontics at the KLE Vishwanath Katti Institute of Dental Sciences celebrated Oral Hygiene Day on 9th August 2018. The celebration was to mark the birth anniversary of Periodontist G.B. Shankhwalker. The importance of oral health and maintenance of oral health were emphasised. Excise Department used drones with camera to identify ganja plants in Karnataka
Excise Department has employed drones fitted with a camera for surveillance in areas vulnerable for the cultivation of ganja. It served well by finding banned crops being cultivated in a clandestine manner in the Shivamogga district of Karnataka. The department had used three drones for surveillance. Each drone has a maximum flight distance of 1.5 kilometre and maximum flight time of 20 minutes. Fifteen Excise personnel have been deployed for the operation.

The Karnataka government has appointed 4 Additional Advocates Generals (AAGs) to represent the government in the Principal Bench of the High Court of Karnataka. The AAGs are A.S. Ponnanna, N. Dinesh Rao, Sandesh J. Chouta, and Nitin Ramesh. The permanent Benches are at Dharwad and Kalaburagi. Advocate I.S. Pramod Chandra has been appointed as Special Public Prosecutor-II in the vacancy created by the appointment of Mr.Chouta as AAG.
