It is important to root out corrupt practices(भ्रष्ट व्यवहार) in banking. But to demoralise(नैतिक करना) the entire(संपूर्ण/साबित)banking system in the process would be wholly counterproductive. The government, the Opposition and the media bear the responsibility to distinguish(अंतर समझाना/पहचानना) between ferreting(खोजना/भगाना) out the bad apples and kicking over the entire barrel(भरना) and trampling all the fruit into the mud. After putting demonetisation and the birth pangs of GST behind it, the economy is on the verge(सीमा) of regaining momentum. Bankers frightened(भयभीत/शंकित) into avoiding any kind of risk can kill off economic revival(पुनः प्रवर्तन/पुनस्र्ज्जीवन). Creating that situation would do more damage than some bad bankers not being dispensed(समाप्त/विभाग करना) their just deserts(रेगिस्तान).
For the government and the RBI, besides for the banks in the glare(चमक/उग्र प्रकाश) of adverse attention, the coordinated(समन्वित) focus should be on damage control and moving ahead. If each party chooses to focus on insulating itself from criticism(आलोचना/समीक्षा) rather than on restoring public confidence in banking, it would reflect(प्रतिबिंबित/विचारना)the understandable instinct(स्वाभाविक/मूल प्रवृत्ति) of the individual to look out for himself, not conscious discharge of public responsibility by those in charge. It is not enough for ICICI to stand by its CEO. It should act fast to clear the air. It should welcome a probe by the RBI or by any other body, put out all facts as desired by any responsible agency entitled(हकदार/स्वत्वाधिकारी) to seek them, and permit its CEO to resume normal activity and the bank to restore normal functioning. If the incometax department wants to probe any taxpayer’s accounts, it is welcome to, but making public such investigations in a manner that adds to a narrative of suspicion while professing righteous virtue for itself does not help the cause of banking. The RBI, too, must refuse to react to charges of negligence in some instance — by those themselves striking out to ward off such a charge — by being damagingly proactive in some other.Ultimately, all economic agents in India work in the framework of a democracy that funds its politics with unaccounted money, political parties admitting(स्वीकार करना/प्रवेश की अनुमति देना)to a tiny fraction of their actual income and expenditure. India needs a systemic corrective, not a segmental(कमानी/खण्डयुक्त) one.
