Types of Linear Sitting Arrangement :- Linear Seating Arrangement Shortcut Tricks & Tips

  1. one row sequence

a ) When direction of face is not clear, then we take our self as base and then the diagram will be as follows :-

From the above diagram it is clear that :-

  • B, C ,D, E are right of A but only B is to the immediate right of A.
  • D, C ,B .A  are left of E but only D is to the immediate left of E.
  • C , D, E  are  right of B  only C is immediate right of B
  • C is in the middle of line .
  •  A and E are sitting at the extreme end of line .

b) When direction of face is towards you, then the diagram will be as follows :-

From the above diagram it is clear that :-

  • B is immediate left of A,
  • C is immediate left of B;
  • D is immediate left of C
  • E is immediate left of D.
  • D is immediate right of E
  • C is immediate right of D
  • B is immediate right of C
  • A is immediate right of B.

2. Two rows sequence

Let us see 6 persons seating in two rows.

From the above diagram, it is clear that :-
(i) A is sitting opposite S.
(ii) B is sitting opposite T.
(iii) C is sitting opposite U.
(iv) A and U are sitting at diagonally opposite positions.
(v) C and S are sitting diagonally opposite positions.

 Example 1 :-

Five friends A, B, C, D, and T are sitting on a bench.
(1) A is sitting next to B.
(2) C is sitting next to D.
(3) S is not sitting with T.
(4) T is on the last end of the bench.
(5) C is on the 2nd position from the right.
(6) A is on the right of B and T.
(7) A and C are sitting together

Solution :-

Here, 4th and 5th sentences constitute definite information.

Comparative information are: 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th sentences .

3rd is a negative information.

STEP 1 :- start with definite information, sketch the following arrangement:-

   T _  _ C _

STEP 2 :-this is the time to look for the comparative informations that tell about T and C. Such informations
are 2nd, 6th and 7th sentences. Take the 7th and the 1st sentence. If A and C are together and also B and A are together, then A must be between B and C. Now the arrangement take the form as:-

 T B A C ____

STEP 3 :- By the virtue of the 2nd sentence:

T B A C D

Example 2 :-

P, Q, R, S, T, U, V and W are eight persons sitting in a row from left to right, not necessarily in the same order. All of them are facing towards North. T and Q are sitting adjacent to each other and neither of them is sitting adjacent to U.  Only S sits to the left of U. W sits neither adjacent to P nor to the left of P. T sits second to the right of W. V sits fourth to the right of U.

Solution :-

Step 1:- As only S sits to the left of U and V sits fourth to the right of U, we get

Step 2 :- Now, T sits second to the right of W and at the same time, W does not sit to the left of P. This implies that W and T can sit only in the following manner

Step 3:- Consequently, Q sits to the right of T as Q and T are sitting adjacent to each other and P sits at third position from the left in the row as P does not sit adjacent to W. Thus, the inal arrangement is shown below:-

NOTES:-

I. Sketch a diagram of empty places
II. Fill up as many empty  places as possible using all the definite informations.
III. With the help of comparative information consider all possibilities and select the possibilities which does not violate any condition
