Russia sends 2 nuclear-capable bombers to Venezuela
Russia has sent two Tu-160, strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons, to Venezuela in an apparent show of support to President Nicolás Maduro’s regime. Russia is a major political ally of Venezuela, which has become increasingly isolated in the world under growing sanctions led by the United States and the European Union, which accuse Maduro of undermining democratic institutions to hold onto power while overseeing an economic and political crisis that is worse than the Great Depression.
RBI fined Indian Bank Rs 1 crore for cyber security violation
The RBI has imposed, by an order dated November 30, 2018, a monetary penalty of Rs 10 million on Indian Bank for contravention of circular on Cyber Security Framework in banks. This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI under the provisions of… the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 taking into account the failure of the bank to adhere to the aforesaid guidelines and directions issued by RBI.
Commonwealth Games gold medallist Krishna Poonia becomes an MLA in Rajasthan
Discus thrower Krishna Poonia, the 2010 CWG gold medallist and Congress candidate, won the Sadulpur assembly seat in Rajasthan, defeating sitting BSP MLA Manoj Nyangali. It was Poonia’s second attempt to get entry in the state legislature, having suffered defeat in the previous elections.
Anushka, Kartik named India’s Hottest Vegetarians by PETA
Actors Anushka Sharma and Kartik Aaryan have been named India’s Hottest Vegetarians, according to votes on the official website of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India. Anushka Sharma is the only woman to bag this title twice. She previously won in 2015. Rajkummar Rao, Alia Bhatt were named India’s Hottest Vegetarians by PETA last year.
Myanmar to grant visa-on-arrival to Indians
This comes as President Ram Nath Kovind is on an official visit to Myanmar. Myanmar will provide visa-on-arrival to Indian tourists entering the country through the international airports of Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon and Mandalay to further people-to-people interactions. President Kovind called Myanmar a key partner of India’s ‘Act East’ and ‘Neighbourhood First’ policies.
As many as 164 countries adopted first-ever global migration agreement in Morocco
The UN’s Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration aims to enhance international cooperation on migration issues. The US, Australia, Austria, Chile, Hungary and Poland are among the nations that have pulled out from the non-binding pact. It comprises 23 objectives for better management of migration at local, national, regional and global levels.
Slain Journalist Khashoggi Named Time Magazines Person of the Year
Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was murdered in October 2018 at his country’s Istanbul consulate, has been named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” alongside several other journalists. The magazine also honored Philippine journalist Maria Ressa, Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo — currently imprisoned in Myanmar and the staff of the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, including five members killed in a June shooting.
International Mountain Day observed on December 11
The Theme for the 2018 edition of the International Mountain Day is: “#MountainsMatter”. It is celebrated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to spread awareness about the contribution of mountains in the biodiversity as it consists of approximately a quarter of the terrestrial biological diversity. To commemorate the day, there will be an IMD side event on “Mountain adaptation: Vulnerable peaks and people” at UNFCCC COP24 in Katowice, Poland.
Ex-SBI Chief Arundhati Bhattacharya appointed as SWIFT India Chairman
Arundhati Bhattacharya will be seen replacing Mavila Vishwanathan Nair, the present Chairman of The Indian arm of SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) SWIFT India Domestic Services, whose term is going to end after five years. Arundhati Bhattacharya served India’s largest bank by assets SBI as its 24th Chairman.

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shri Radha Mohan Singh launched a portal ENSURE- National Livestock Mission-EDEG developed by NABARD and operated under the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries. Under the National Livestock Mission component called Entrepreneurship Development and Employment Generation (EDEG), subsidy payment for activities related to poultry, small ruminants, pigs, etc. goes directly to the beneficiary’s account through Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT). The NABARD developed an online portal “ENSURE” (https://ensure.nabard.org), in order to make the process of DBT better, simpler and transparent, so that the information related to beneficiary and processing of the application can be made readily available.
Shaktikanta Das appointed as the new RBI Governor
Former economic affairs secretary Shaktikanta Das was named the 25th governor of the Reserve Bank of India to succeed Urjit Patel, who quit abruptly on December 10 amid a bitter dispute over the regulator’s autonomy. The appointment will be for three years. He is a 1980 batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre and is currently a member of the Fifteenth Finance Commission. Das also represents India at the G-20 in the role of a sherpa.

Indian economist Surjit Bhalla announced his resigned from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council (PMEAC). His resignation is effective from December 1, 2018. After the resignation, he joined the CNN IBN group.

TRS won the 119-member Telangana Assembly elections for second straight term
Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has won 60 seats in Telangana, while Congress is in second position with 13 seats. TRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao won from his constituency Gajwel by 58,290 votes. Asauddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won seven of the eight seats it contested in the Telangana assembly polls.
Congress won Rajasthan Assembly Election 2018 with 99 seats
BJP has secured 73 seats in the 200-member state assembly as compared to 163 in 2013 state Assembly elections. The Bahujan Samaj Party won 6 seats, CPI(M) 2, Independents 13 and other parties got 6. Meanwhile, 41-year-old Sachin Pilot and 67-year-old Ashok Gehlot are said to be Congress’ candidates for the Chief Ministerial post. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje submitted her resignation to Governor Kalyan Singh on December 11.
Congress beats BJP in Chhattisgarh Assembly elections after 15 years
Congress has secured the required majority in the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly and will form the government in the state for the first time in 15 years. It has secured 47 seats so far, while the BJP, which has been in power in the state since 2003, has won 10 seats. BJP chief minister Raman Singh, who governed Chhattisgarh for 15 years, resigned. The Congress will choose the state’s new chief minister at a meeting of its new legislators.

Congress emerged as the single largest party in Madhya Pradesh by securing 114 seats
As per the final results of Madhya Pradesh Assembly election 2018 (230-seat Assembly) declared by the Election Commission after 24 hours of counting, the Congress won 114 seats while the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 109 seats. India and ADB Sign $31 Million Loan Agreement For Tamil Nadu
The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed in New Delhi a Loan Agreement for $31 million to build-up the State Tourism Industry and boost visitor arrivals in Tamil Nadu. The signatories to the tranche 4 loan for Infrastructure Development Investment Program for Tourism (IDIPT) were Mr. Sameer Kumar Khare, Additional Secretary (Fund Bank and ADB), Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, who signed for the Government of India, and Mr. Kenichi Yokoyama, Country Director for ADB in India, who signed for ADB.
