UAE revealed the names of the 2 astronauts for the space mission

The United Arab Emirates has disclosed its first two astronauts to go on a mission to the International Space Station. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed al-Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, and Ruler of the Emirate of Dubai named the new astronauts as Hazza al-Mansouri, 34-year-old, and Sultan al-Neyadi, 37-year-old. The UAE has its sights set on space with a programme worth 20 billion dirhams i.e, $5.4 billion. UAE has announced its plans to become the first Arab country to send an unmanned probe to orbit Mars by 2021. The probe is named as “Hope”. The astronaut programme would make the UAE one of only a handful of states in the Middle East to have sent a person into space.

NASA seeks ideas to convert Carbon dioxide to an useful compound

NASA has announced a public competition seeking novel solutions to turn Carbon dioxide into useful compounds. The challenge is open to all. This is to find a solution that might help future astronauts exploring Mars as the Martin atmosphere has abundant CO2 . The competition will be conducted in two phases. During Phase 1, teams must submit a design and description of a conversion system that includes details of the physical-chemical approaches to convert carbon dioxide into glucose. And NASA will award up to five teams USD 50,000 each. Phase 2 will carry a prize purse of up to USD 750,000, for a total challenge prize of USD 1 million.

Paytm Money launched new app for google android and Apple iOS

Paytm Money Limited introduced an app on Google’s Android platform and Apple’s mobile operating system iOS. The aim is to double the mutual fund investor base in India with 50 million in the next five years. For this, Paytm has partnered with 25 asset management companies. The focus of Paytm, the wholly-owned subsidiary of One97 Communications Ltd, would be on building investments and wealth management products and services.

Ukraine launched joint military exercises with the U.S. and other NATO countries

Ukraine has launched joint military exercises with the U.S. and a string of other NATO countries. The annual Rapid Trident military exercises are to happen in the western Ukrainian village of Starychi until September 15, involve some 2,200 soldiers from 14 countries. This is because of the rise in tension with Russia remains high over the Kremlin-backed insurgency in the country’s east. The event will start a week before Russia holds its biggest military exercises, Vostok 2018, since the Cold War, with the participation of China and Mongolia. It is expected that around 350 pieces of military equipment will be used during the exercises. The Ukrainian Border Guard Service and the National Guard troops will be participating in this exercise.

The exercise, known as ‘IOWave18’, is being organized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, which coordinated the setting up of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWMS) in the aftermath of December 2004 tsunami.

China pledged to offer USD 60 billion to Africa

China has offered USB 60 bn funds to Africa in order to boost industry, counter hunger, and enhance security. China will carry out 50 China-Africa security assistance programmes will be launched under the flagship Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The China-Africa “green envoys programme” would strengthen Africa’s capacity for environmental management, pollution prevention and control, as well as green development. China also vowed to set up an environmental cooperation centre where research on environmental issues will be conducted. China will also train 1,000 high-calibre Africans, provide 50,000 government scholarships, sponsored seminars and workshops that would benefit 50,000 Africans, and invite 2,000 African youths to visit China for exchanges.

India and Russia plans for logistics agreements

India and Russia are planning to conclude a logistics agreement. The countries are targeting to conclude consultations before the annual summit which has been scheduled to happen in October between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Logistics agreements are administrative arrangements that facilitate access to military facilities for exchange of fuel and provisions on mutual agreement. It also simplifies logistical support and increases operational turnaround of the military when operating away from India. It should be noted that India and Russia have had deep military-to-military cooperation for several decades. Apart from this agreement, India has signed with France, Oman, the Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia. Recently, Australia has also sent a draft agreement.

RBI buys gold for the first time in 9 years

Taking a cue from global uncertainties, market volatility, and rising interest rates in the US, The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has added 8.46 tonnes of gold during the financial year 2017-18, taking the level of gold reserves to 566.23 tonnes as on June 30, 2018. RBI last purchased 200 tonnes of gold from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in November 2009.

Congress wins 982 seats in Karnataka urban body polls

According to the Karnataka state election commission, BJP secured 929 seats while JD(S) won 325 seats in the elections which were held on August 31. Congress won the majority of 982 seats across 10 of 22 Karnataka districts during vote count for 105 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

India and Cyprus signed MoUs on curbing money laundering

India and Cyprus signed two Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on combating money laundering and cooperation in the field of environment. The MoU was signed between Financial Intelligence Unit, India, and Unit for Combating Money Laundering of Cyprus. Mr.Kovind and Mr.Anastasiades held discussions on issues of mutual interest, including promotion of business collaboration in the fields of IT and IT-enabled services, tourism, shipping and renewable energy. They also reviewed the ongoing bilateral and multilateral engagements and discussed issues of regional and global concern.
