Khangchendzonga became 11th biosphere reserve in World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR)

The decision to include Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve in WNBR was taken at the 30th Session of International Coordinating Council (ICC) of Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme of UNESCO held at Palembang, Indonesia. India has 18 Biosphere Reserves and with the inclusion of Khangchendzonga, the number of internationally designated WNBR has become 11, with 7 Biosphere Reserves being domestic Biosphere Reserves.

RSS thinker S Gurumurthy, Satish Marathe appointed as directors on RBI board

The government appointed Swaminathan Gurumurthy and Satish Kashinath Marathe as as part-time non-official directors on the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) board, for a period of four years. Gurumurthy, an economist and chartered accountant by profession, is also the co-convenor of RSS-affiliated Swadeshi Jagran Manch. A vocal supporter of PM Narendra Modi’s policies, Gurumurthy had defended the demonetisation of high value currency notes. Marathe began his banking career with Bank of India, and then became chairman of The United Western Bank Ltd. He is also the founder of Sahakar Bharati, an NGO that supports co-operatives in India. The RBI Act allows ten directors nominated by the government. With these two appointments, RBI’s board now has 10 government-appointed members.

Govt extended eVisa facility for citizens of 165 countries

In order to promote tourism, the Indian government has extended e-visa facility for citizens of 165 countries at 25 airports and five seaports. On March 2018, The Ministry of Tourism has launched the ‘Incredible India 2.0’ campaign, to promote various destinations and tourism products of the country including spiritual, medical and wellness tourism in important and potential source markets overseas.

 Cabinet approved for four more NDRF battalions

The Union Cabinet approved for four more battalions of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The estimated cost for the approval is Rs.637 crore. It aimed at reducing the response time considering the country’s vast geographic area. Among the four battalions, initially, two battalions will be raised in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and one each in the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Assam Rifles. Once raised in the marked areas, these battalions will be converted into NDRF battalions. In future, these battalions have been planned to be placed in J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the Delhi National Capital Region based on the need.

Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED) was established in August 1987 by the Ministry of Welfare, Government of India.

Scientists found a new compound which might reverse human cell ageing

Scientists have developed a new compound which is believed to reverse ageing in human cells. This might lead to the basis for a new generation anti-degenerative drugs. Compounds namely AP39, AP123 and RT01 were designed in a way that they can selectively deliver minute quantities of the gas hydrogen sulphide to the mitochondria, the power stations, in cells. By delivering so, it helps the old or damaged cells to generate the energy needed for survival and to reduce senescence. These compounds produced a 40-50% drop in the number of senescent blood vessel cells.

SBI launched unified payment terminal MOPAD

State Bank of India (SBI) launched its latest customer-friendly digital initiative Multi Option Payment Acceptance Device (MOPAD) at a shopping mall, in Visakhapatnam. The new device titled MOPAD is a Point of Sale (PoS) terminal that would along with cards accept payments through UPI, Bharat QR, and SBI Buddy wallet which till now required different tools to receive payments. So customers won’t have to carry cards for shopping, MOPAD can just scan the QR code to make the payment. A charge-slip as a proof of payment, will be available for customers who pay through MOPAD.

Santali becomes 1st Indian tribal language to get own Wikipedia edition

The Santhali Wikipedia got approval from the language committee of the Wikimedia Foundation on June 28 and went live on August 2. It presently has content of about 70,000 words. Santali is written in Ol Chiki script and spoken by 6.4 million people, according to the 2001 census, in India alone and its speakers live mostly in Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and Assam. It is also spoken in Bangladesh and Nepal. Several hundred students wrote their Class 10 board examinations under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) in the Ol Chiki script for the first time this year. Wikipedia is available in nearly 300 languages globally as of August 2018.

Global Innovation Index (GII) 2018 launched in India

The event was organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) – one of the founding partners of Global Innovation Index (GII) along with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in collaboration with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). GII improved from 60 in 2017 to 57 in 2018.

Rajya Sabha passes Immovable Property Amendment Bill

he Requisitioning and Acquisition of Immovable Property (Amendment) Bill, 2017 which was moved by Union Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, was adopted by a voice vote. The Lok Sabha had passed the bill in December last year. Aim:- To amend the regulations governing the compensation payable for acquisition of immovable property by the Centre for defence and security purposes.

Mike Pence disclosed the plans of U.S. in building its 6th Space Force

Mike Pence, U.S. Vice-President, disclosed the details of the plans to build a U.S. Space Force, the sixth branch of America’s massive military. It was President Donald Trump’s vision to create the Space Force. Trump said that the Pentagon needs it to tackle vulnerabilities in space and assert U.S. dominance in orbit. Mr.Pence also said that an independent Space Force was necessary to counter Russia and China, who are working towards anti-satellite capabilities. U.S. will be investing an additional $8 billion in U.S. space security systems over the next five years.

Ramco Systems acquired a multi-million dollar order from AP Cargo Logistic Network Corporation

Ramco Systems, a Software firm, acquired a multi-million dollar order from Manila-based air freight leader AP Cargo Logistic Network Corporation with an aim to implement its logistics software. It is expected that AP Cargo would implement the software to streamline its freight operations countrywide. AP Cargo partnered with Ramco after the partnership with the Philippines as it was adopting IT solutions to ramp up its logistics capabilities and infrastructure. The freight and logistics market is expected to reach $60.22 billion by 2023.

Taiwans Wistron to invest Rs.1,150 crore in Karnataka

Taiwan’s Wistron, a contract manufacturer of Apple iPhones in India, has plans to invest Rs.1,150 crore in Karnataka during the first phase of operations. It is expected to manufacture components in Phase II and Phase III. As Apple is demanding tax concessions from the State government it is not directly investing but has given the contract to Wistron.
